Dentist Language Exam (Fachsprachprüfung– FSP)

Since the second half of 2014, the State Dental Associations has been taking over the technical language test for foreign dentists for the district governments.

Course of the proceedings

The processing of applications for the approval as a matter of responsibility lies with the district government .The district governments send the contact details of the examinees.

Note: It is not possible to register personally with the Dental Council, you have to send all inquiries regarding obtaining your license to the district government!

After the Dental Council has received the data from the respective district government, they usually contact the applicant by e-mail and ask them to transfer the administrative fee for the technical language exam.

Note: This also applies to repeat exams!

After receipt of the fee, the applicant will be informed of the next possible exam date.

Note: The time is to be observed precisely, because a late or NO appearance is considered as failed attempt in the exam.

The place of examination will be the Dental Association of the respective state.

Exam procedure

The technical language test is designed to be as practical as possible. All elements can be found in everyday dental practice. The examination only refers to the technical language and not to the basic knowledge of dentistry.

The 60-minute exam is divided into 3 stations of 20 minutes each:

  • Dentist-patient interview
  • Documentation
  • Dentist-dentist conversation

Dentist-Patient interview (ward 1)

The examinee conducts a medical history interview with a fictitious patient as part of a simulated dentist-patient discussion.

The history taking is done exactly as it was learned in the course of the study and in the form of questioning the patient about his symptoms.

After the examinee has made an impression of the patient, he explains his suspected diagnosis and makes suggestions for further treatment and therapy to the patient.

Note: There is no clinical examination.

Documentation (ward 2)

The examinee is to transfer the patient's self-collected medical history into, for example, a medical report / doctor's letter, etc. The report of findings / letter to the doctor should contain the aspects and knowledge gained in ward 1.

Dentist-dentist discussion (ward 3)

The examinee sits with two or three dentists and presents the patients seen in ward 1. The written report / doctor's letter from ward 2 will be given to the examiners.

It must be communicated in the dental language. The examinee should also explain his own assessment and ideas for further treatment.

Tools during the exam

Each candidate is given an empty notepad and a pen. Other aids (such as specialist literature, mobile phones and smart phones) are not permitted. Also, no handbags, jackets, coats or the like may be taken into the examination rooms.

Note: During the test, telephoning and any contact with uninvolved persons are considered an attempt to deceive and lead to the test not being passed.

Qualification for dentists

In order to obtain a license to practice dentistry, you must present certain documents and proofs. You will require the language examination on level B2. You will also need the C1 level language test and the knowledge test (study of dentistry in a non-EU country).

Goals and contents of the training course

The Eurizone International Academy GmbH teaches specialist language and communication skills in the field of dentistry. The aim is to pass the C1 level examination for dentists and therefore the training is structured as follows:

Module I: 4 weeks

Basics of dental communication. Technical terms and communication structures.

Module II: 4 weeks

In this course you’ll learn more about the technical language you’ve got already learned and the way to use it in simulated patient scenarios.

At the top of the course there’ll be a patient communication test in dentistry, which all participants need to pass. In addition, these advanced courses are taught by qualified teachers within the field of dentistry.

Participation requirements for “Communication Module I and II”

You should have completed a university degree in dentistry and have language skills on level B2. In addition, you should pass the placement test.

Knowledge test for dentists

To ensure patient protection and the quality-oriented practice of the dental profession, the law on the practice of dentistry has been amended accordingly that if training in a non-EU country does not give the training equivalence or can only be determined with unreasonable effort, an equivalent level of knowledge must be demonstrated for the Approbation to be issued.

This evidence is provided by taking an examination (knowledge test). Even for applicants with training certificates from EU countries, the license to practice dentistry can only be granted if the equivalence of the level of knowledge has been demonstrated. A suitability test may then be carried out for these.

Conducting the knowledge test

The examination is to be requested from the German Dental Council (application form). For this reason, you will receive the dates and the invitation to the exam from the Dental Association and must pay the fees there.

The examination board consists of the chairperson and three to four other members. The knowledge test is an oral-practical exam (on the phantom head) and takes place in the University Medical Center, Center for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The knowledge test has been successfully completed if the examination committee takes an overall view of the achievements in the above mentioned. At the end of the examination, the chairperson of the examination board will inform the candidate whether there is an equivalent level of knowledge or not.

After passing the knowledge test:

Approbation is granted on application, if the other requirements are also met (health and personal suitability, passed specialist language test).

Failed knowledge test:

The knowledge test can only be repeated twice. Between the exams, a temporary license can be issued with restrictions for a maximum of 1 year if the examination board has determined that working as a dentist is possible without affecting the health of the patient.

Application

The application for participation in the knowledge test can be submitted to the German Dental Council. Application can be submitted by the one who:

  1. has met the legal requirements for the granting of the license or the temporary exercise of the dental profession,
  2. can prove an employment position in the hospital.

The following documents must be submitted in the German Dental Council of the respective state in which you wish to practice further along with all the complete set of documentation and translations (if your documents are not in German Language). Also a handwritten, formulated CV is required which should mention every detail about your education and employment with specific dates.
